Description:

Book is Fair in no dust jacket. Half-Leather binding, First Edition,
Hurst & Blackett, London, 1884. Volume II only of the very scarce true first of Haggard's first novel. With a print run of only 500, not many of these can survive today. We offer this odd volume in the hope that it will complete a set somewhere. The title page reads "Dawn by H. Rider Haggard. [poem] In three volumes Vol II, London: Hurst & Blackett, Publishers, 13 Great Marlborough Street. 1884. The text block is reasonable, with all leaves present (bound with no adverts or such). The case (which may be original) is detached and split along the rear hinge. The red leather spine is very cornerworn, spine darkened, but could be restored to something reasonable. The marbled paper covering of the boards is very rubbed and cracked, and all board edges completely worn. The text block is reasonably sound, has binding chords still intact, obviously these are split from the boards. paper generally OK except for patches of purplish mould affecting the inner margins of the rear 30 pages or so. It is the type of mould that turns the paper brittle, so not a good thing to have happened, but the worst parts could be strengthened by a paper restorer if need be. Its really only the extreme corners of the back half dozen pages that are showing brittleness. The rest of the text block has the usual collection of finger smudges and corner folds consistent with this copy bearing the "W. H. Smith & Sons Subscription Library, The Strand, London" bookplate on the front inner pastedown. This gives a clue that the binding may have been specially done for a library. The rear last page is detached, the rear flyleaf is still attached to the rear board, and these are a bit mouldy, the mould now a dry powder that can be brushed off. The pagination goes flyleaf, half title, title leaf (blank on back), 334pp, blank rear flyleaf. Seems all the leaves are present.
